The latest officially released still from Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows depicts Johnny Depp as a youthful looking Barnabas Collins. Compared with Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, Depp is an “old school” vampire with ghostly complexion that is definitely a “whiter shade of pale” and a “creep” factor that reminds viewers that a vampire is not to be confused with a teddy bear. This closeup of Depp and his long elegant fingers complete with claw-like nail extensions makes him appear much more menacing than a previously released still that shows him menacing Michelle Pfeiffer (see “Depp, Pfeiffer in Dark Shadows”). The lighting in the new still is especially effective in setting off Depp’s hollow-eyed look.

Comparing these stills with the first candid shots taken by amateurs (see “First Look at Depp as Barnabas Collins”) the importance of Burton’s lighting is very evident. Depp’s heavy white makeup is way too obvious in the beach location snapshots. The antique blue shades are a real visual treat, but they will look even better in the movie. The newly released still of Depp as Barnabas Collins is a far better indicator of how the amazingly youthful (and creepy) looking 48-year-old star will appear in the movie.

Marvel has declined to comment on reports circulating today (most notably, and first, on CBR) that as many as 15 employees in editorial and production roles are being laid off. At least one editor, Alejandro Arbona, has obliquely confirmed his layoff on Twitter.

The layoffs follow the departure of Chief Operating Officer Jim Sokolowski, who was laid off a couple of weeks ago in a costcutting move.

The rumors coming out of Marvel at New York Comic Con were bleak, and included a reduced number of exclusive contracts for creators in the future (Andy Diggle has since revealed that he’s no longer under exclusive with Marvel), declining freelancer rates, projects that had been planned but were now being eliminated, and a general belt-tightening.

Cutting back on the poorest-selling titles is certainly one way of reducing costs and improving profitability, but as the sales charts reveal, Marvel also has a problem with its top releases, which are selling significantly below where they did a year ago. This September, for example (see “Top 300 Comics—September 2011”) Marvel’s best seller, Fear Itself #6, sold around 93,000 copies. A year ago, in September 2010 (see “Top 300 Comics—September 2010”), Marvel’s top seller, Wolverine #1, sold around 104,000, already not a stellar performance for a new #1 featuring the most popular member of the X-Men. Marvel’s been drifting for a couple of years, and it’s probably going to have to look at fundamental issues affecting creativity, as DC has, to turn things around.

As if the digital revolution didn’t present publishers with enough challenges by itself, it now appears that the latest mode of publishing and distribution, which is fast approaching a 50% market share of books sold, has also spawned a major competitor for mainstream publishers. Internet retailing giant Amazon is becoming more than just an online bookseller and distributor of digital books and comics. In of the fall of 2012 Amazon plans to publish (both as e-books and in print) 122 books in a variety of genres. Amazon has hired veteran publisher Laurence Kirshbaum and signed a number of bestselling authors including self-help guru Tim Ferriss. The company has even entered the “big stakes” fray, paying a reported $800,000 advance to actress/director Penny Marshall for her memoir.

According to The New York Times, the specter of Amazon as a competitor has traditional publishers very worried. The forthcoming release of Amazon’s low-priced Kindle Fire tablet should only serve to cement the company’s position in the forefront of digital distribution. Amazon was able to use its distribution muscle to gain a 4-month window of exclusivity for digital editions of DC Comics’ bestselling graphic novels including Watchmen, which created a backlash among Amazon’s bookselling competitors who pulled DC’s graphic novels off their shelves (see “B&N to DC—It’sOn” and “Books-a-Million Joins DC Boycott”).

Over the past decade Amazon has clearly become the major threat to brick-and-mortar booksellers, and now it appears that the sprawling giant will be a major menace to publishers and perhaps even literary agents as well. The specter of a vertically integrated Amazon, which can develop, publish, and distribute its own books, is not a pleasant one for publishers to contemplate.

Should comic book publishers be worried? Well, the touch screen, full color Kindle Fire certainly has the capacity to reproduce comics, though the economic model for comics and graphic novels, which involves publishing the material first in pamphlet form and then collecting it as a graphic novel, would present problems for Amazon. The extra effort involved in creating illustrated literature, the drawing, inking, lettering, and coloring, which all has to be done in addition to the writing, makes the comics medium more collaborative and expensive. Bottom line—Amazon could end up publishing the kind of graphic novels that mainstream publishers do now, but it would be less likely to try and compete with comic publishers who publish via the periodical-first model.

Of course if sales of digital graphic novels would grow to the point where they could easily defray the costs of producing the original art work (or if technical advances could reduce the costs of graphic novel production), all bets are off. It is clear that we have entered a “brave new world” of publishing. It is not clear how this new world will sort itself out.

A pretty interesting cast of characters have come together to develop a World War II vampire movie, The Bleeding, which will be directed by Josef Rusnak (The Thirteenth Floor, It's Alive, The Contractor).

Jeremy Wall (Jaz Films) optioned the script and is producing along with Corina Danckwerts - who both produced the supernatural thriller The Objective, written and directed by Daniel Myrick (The Blair Witch Project).

The Bleeding is based on a short story by Bram Stoker Award-nominated William R. Trotter entitled "The Bleeding of Hauptmann Gehlen". John and Paul Buckholts wrote the feature script and will serve as Exec. Producers.

For his next big screen adventure, Spider-Man is going back to the beginning. Well, sort of.

The first teaser trailer for the Marc Webb-directed film, "The Amazing Spider-Man" has hit the web, promising a bit of a change in origin story for the legendary webslinger. In the comics, and the Sam Raimi-directed, Tobey Maguire-starring films, Peter Parker is a nerdy weakling who gets endowed with incredible powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider during a class field trip to a science lab. In the new film, Andrew Garfield's Parker is no doubt weak, and he's bitten by a spider, it comes during a visit to see his crush, Emma Stone's Gwen Stacey, who is working at the lab.

The lab, by the way, is run by one Rhys Ifans, the man who will later become the villain, The Lizard.

Speaking about the trailer Tuesday night, Emma Stone said, "I've seen the trailer, which I believe comes out ahead of Captain America. I thought it was amazing... It's pretty cool, but maybe I'm a little biased. We'll see how people respond to it."

The film hits theaters on July 3rd, 2012.

Synopsis

This time both must clash with the evils and perils of heaven and hell. This is essentially the first sidekick the Crow has had. The inside ministry cover for number 0 is done by Eric Powell who is lead singer for the band 16 Volt.
A final showdown between Eric, Nicole, and Pain. Eric and Nicole battle different Pain beasts, each a representation of their own "pain."
Although numbered #0, this issue actually takes place after issues #1-#4.

Rich: How is the screenplay for "RAZOR" coming along?

Everette: The 4th draft has been sent to me from John Shirley and Jeff Most ( The Crow, The Tomb) and I must say it is action packed and very enjoyable. It features all of the main characters from the comic book series, even a few obscured ones, so I was pleasantly surprised. The script does bring in new mythos with Razor, but the origin remains intact.

Rich: Are you finding writing a screenplay much different than writing a comic?

Everette: I personally have a tougher time writing a script than a comic, because I have too much going on in my life to focus on 1 thing..I would have to leave my house and get away to a cabin in the mountains for a week to complete a script.

Rich: What is "Zombie Hunter X", who are the cast?

Everette: ZHX is being developed as a web-series that shows different time lines in the character's lives as they are confronted with a reanimation virus. Like episode 1 may start with the very 1st week after the outbreak..next episode may deal with a group surviving in the desert at year 5 from the outbreak, so you can see many people, characters and scenes in different time frames dealing with the outbreak.

Rich: Why do you think Razor was so successful?

Everette: Back in the early 90's, there were a few books that featured heavily violent mature story lines and those books were highly sought after, but rarely came out. I wanted to do a book like that and intertwine all of my favorite characters and put the book out as close to monthly as possible.. so the success came from the content and the commitment by me and my team of producers.

Rich: How would you describe Razor's personality?

Everette: A lonely soul, always looking into herself asking questions. She was always afraid to trust others or weary of opening up

Rich: Are there any updates on the Razor movie?

Everette: many updates, none of which I can share at the moment.

Rich: What does Razor represent to you on a personal level?

Everette: RAZOR gave me the freedom to be what I've always dreamed of being..a creator. I know that the odds were stacked against me from the beginning, but if you take a deep breath and believe in what you're doing, you can accomplish a lot and that's what that character gave me.

Rich: Will we ever see any new Razor comics?

Everette: You will see new books, I've teamed up with Kevin Alsop of AMRYL publishing to bring new product out in 2011 , starting with 2 giant collectors book of 500+ pages collecting all of the 50+ issues of RAZOR from the 90's for a 20th anniversary edition

Rich: What part of your career and your life are you most proud of?

Everette: The part of my career I'm most proud of is actually making an impact or a name in the industry at all, not only did my company London Night Studios have a good character, but we launched the careers of many major players in the game today, such as DAVID MACK, BILLY TUCCI, ERIC POWELL, ED McGUINESS, NAT JONES to name a few..that's an accomplishment in itself.. The part of my life I'm most proud about is doing something special with my life and my grandfather and grand mother being able to witness it before they passed.

Rich: Do you have any other projects you are working on?

Everette: Working on my anthology SHE DEVIL COMICS which will introduce several new female characters and stories for movie options

Rich: What do you think of the current state of the comic industry?

Everette: The comic industry is really not an industry at all..It's 1 distributor ( Diamond, Previews) that caters to the companies that are flushed with cash. A new indie creator has a tough time even getting distribution through Diamond in today's market, which means a fresh title like" RAZOR" and an unknown creator like myself would never even be seen..so I feel it's a sad state the industry is in. Luckily the internet is here to take the place of the traditional old school distribution channels. I'll personally be self- distributing.

Rich: How do you like to spend any free time you have?

Everette: My free time is spent with my 4 year old son, my wife and our 6- victorian bulldogs, plus I do enjoy going to the movies.

Hi,

my name´s Claudia, I´m from Germany and I bought your digital Razor compendiums from Lulu yesterday. What a luck! I recently re-discovered Razor while thinking about her while listening to a new album (perhaps you know it: "Unforgiving" by Within Temptation) which put very specific, movie-like images in my mind, as the songs and ly...rics included, match lots and lots of the Razor-legacy. I own some comics from earlier on, covering the main plot points, also the complete Stryke-line, and got to them right away. Once again, I loved it!
The funny thing is, around the same time, I shit you not, exactly this happened to a good friend of mine while listening to another album. He immediately got online and searched around, finding your blog and the compendiums you offer. He ordered the paper form by the way.
Hopefully lots of people will rediscover the treasure that is Razor again. I really would love to see new stuff...

Anyway, that all got me inspired very much. I´m an artist myself and I´m currently working on some new, more cinematic Razor-images. Great! A couple of years ago I did a Razor piece which I worked on again, refining some details - and I wanted to share this with you. I´m quite sure you like the way I portrayed her. Just a little thank you from me.

Notes about a “Razor” sharp influence.

“Razor” is a comic book that was created by a gentleman named Everette Hartsoe in the early 90s. He published the comic via an indy comic book company he started called London Night Studios. It was at the forefront of a series of comics featuring what has been termed as “bad girl art” and female characters in the lead who were as much anti-heroines as they were heroines.

I stumbled across “Razor” at the very end of the run in 1998. To be exact, during the final issues which were a crossover with “The Crow”. And to some extent or another, I owe the discovered to two dames (one living and one dead), a Subway Sandwich run, and a bit of curiosity about a poster.

The dead girl was named Mary Beth. Mary Beth was a girl who I was a friend with back when I worked at Lakeshore Mall. She was not dead at the time. The other girl was named Julie. Julie was a girl that I met at West Georgia who I had been interested in at one point. We became friends but never got much beyond that. On this particular night, we were helping each other study for mid-terms. In the midst of studying, we decided to make a Subway run. I wanted to go pick up a couple of comics and this may or may not have been an excuse to go do so. I don’t recall.

Julie and I got to the comic shop and I saw this poster advertising the forthcoming “Crow/Razor” crossover. I was curious about it as I had just seen The Crow. For whatever reason, I didn’t get around to reserving the title that day though. (I suspect Julie might’ve been involved but there was likely other reasons. For some reason, I vaguely recall this store being quite asinine about ordering indy titles. A few weeks months later, I saw the advertisement for what was essentially the last issue. I loved the cover and bought it. I wound up getting the rest of the issues all at once. At some point, I managed to get a few back issues but those were all removed from my possession by a girl along with my first two-volumes of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman in trade paperback.

What had my interest was the character of Razor though more than The Crow. (I’ve always like bad girls, what can I say.) I did a little research into the title and into this guy Evertte’s work. The back story about how the comic came to be is probably better heard from him than me. Sometime later, I returned home on break from school and learned of Mary Beth’s passing. I decided to take a cue from what Everette had done and write something to help me deal with the matter. The piece was a spoken world piece. Years later, that piece along with a short story that I’d wrote in early 1998 would be the cornerstone of a certain script which I someday soon hope to finish. And I resolved that if I ever got the opportunity, I’d buy that guy a beer.

Last year, I wound up with Everette as friend on Facebook. I am not sure if I have thanked him. Regardless, here is a more public thanking. Upon making his acquaintance, I learned that Everette is looking at getting into the film business (doing some low-budget horror films most likely) and is also looking writing a novel as I understand it.
